President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo led the ceremony commemorating the 200 years of the Republic, highlighting that Mexico continues to experience a profound cultural transformation on its path towards an independent, sovereign, free, just, and democratic nation.
In her speech, Sheinbaum stated: "It took 200 years of the Republic for women to reach the Presidency of Mexico. This decision by the people of Mexico speaks to the profound cultural transformation we are living through." Accompanied by figures such as Congressman Sergio Gutiérrez Luna, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, Clara Brugada Molina, and others, the president emphasized the importance of the establishment of the Republic.
She recalled that 200 years ago, days after the promulgation of the Constitution of 1824, Guadalupe Victoria took office as the constitutional president of the United Mexican States, being the first to hold that position. Sheinbaum underscored the significance of this historic date where, two centuries later, women have also reached the presidency, noting that there is still work to combat inequality and eradicate poverty and discrimination in all its forms.
Before an audience mainly composed of girls and boys from different educational institutions, the president highlighted the importance of recognizing independence in the greatness of Mexico, present in history and in the heroes of the homeland such as Guadalupe Victoria. Sheinbaum concluded by emphasizing confidence in the greatness of the Mexican people to overcome prejudices and inequalities inherited from colonial times.
